Which Etsy category does a DTF transfer belong in?

Category is the one required field on this page that nobody can answer for you in advance, because it decides which shoppers ever see the listing. Etsy sorts its whole catalogue into a tree, and a listing sits on exactly one leaf of it. A DTF transfer is a component: the buyer presses it onto a shirt, a tote or a hat, and the transfer on its own is not the thing they will wear. That puts it on the supplies branch, alongside stencils, vinyl and iron-ons, rather than in clothing.

Mirra defaults to the Image Transfers leaf under Craft Supplies & Tools, and the sheet above shows the full path so you can walk down to it in Etsy's own category picker. Use the picker rather than a number copied from anywhere, including from Mirra. Etsy owns the numbering, reshapes the tree on its own schedule, and the picker is the only place the current wording is guaranteed correct on the day you list.

Nothing about this is an Etsy instruction. Etsy publishes no page saying DTF transfers go here. It is a judgement about what the product is, and if you sell the pressed garment rather than the transfer, the judgement flips and so does the category.

Is a DTF transfer a supply or a finished product?

Etsy asks this as a single flag, and its own description of the field is blunt about the effect: true tags the listing as a supply product, false indicates a finished product, and the answer decides whether shoppers browsing the Supplies heading find it. The field also refuses to travel alone. Etsy's specification says it requires both maker fields alongside it, so a listing cannot set one of the three and skip the rest.

For a transfer that ships to a buyer who presses it themselves, the supply answer follows from what the product is. That is why Mirra sends it, and it is Mirra's call rather than a rule: Etsy accepts either value without comment. The moment your shop starts shipping pressed shirts, the shirt is the finished product and the flag is wrong.

What do the maker fields mean for a transfer you printed?

Who made it and when it was made are both required, and Etsy will not create the draft without them. They are also the two fields sellers most often get wrong, because they read like paperwork and are actually the inputs to Etsy's Handmade and Vintage headings. Etsy says so in the field descriptions themselves.

Answer them about the transfer in the buyer's hand. Who ran the printer, and when. If a production partner printed it, the honest answer is not the same as if you printed it in your garage, and Etsy has separate rules about production partners that this page does not cover. When it was made has nineteen accepted values, most of them decades for vintage sellers; a transfer printed after the order arrives is made to order, which is why Mirra sends that one.

Watch the spelling. Every value is lower case with underscores, and Etsy's own seller form displays them as ordinary English phrases. Retyping what the form shows instead of what the API takes produces a rejected request with a message that does not obviously point at the field.

Should the listing be physical or a digital download?

Etsy accepts three answers here: physical, download, or both. A printed transfer you put in an envelope is physical, and Etsy then requires a shipping profile on the listing before it will publish. A design file the buyer prints on their own printer is a download, which skips shipping entirely and comes with completely different buyer expectations, refund behaviour and file-format questions.

The distinction is worth stating plainly because the two are sometimes sold from the same artwork. Selling the file is not the same business as selling the transfer, even when the design is identical. Etsy documents its draft-listing endpoint as creating a physical draft, so a download listing does not start life the same way, and Mirra pushes physical transfer listings.

What goes in materials and shipping weight?

Both are optional, and both have a trap. Materials looks like a free-text field and is not: Etsy accepts only letters, numbers and whitespace in a material string, which is stricter than the rule it applies to tags. A hyphen or an ampersand that sails through as a tag is rejected as a material. Write what the transfer is made of, in plain words, and leave the field empty rather than stuffing keywords into it.

Weight is the one field on this page where the right answer is a measurement rather than a value from a list. Etsy publishes no weight for a transfer, there is no figure for it anywhere in Mirra, and any source quoting you a typical weight for a DTF transfer is guessing on your behalf. Weigh one transfer in the mailer you actually ship. Etsy takes oz, lb, g or kg, stores the number and the unit as two separate fields, and requires the number to be greater than zero if you set it at all.

What does this cheat sheet not do?

It does not check your listing. Nothing here reads a draft, connects to your shop or looks at anyone else's listings. It is a reference page: the fields, the values Etsy accepts, and a note on each one saying whether the choice is Etsy's rule or Mirra's opinion.

It does not tell you the numeric category ID, and that is deliberate: Etsy assigns the number, and the picker in your own shop is where you should read it. It does not check your title or your tags, it does not tell you what to charge, and it does not cover Etsy's separate rules about production partners. It is also a snapshot. Etsy can change any of these values, so the date above is part of the information rather than decoration.
